The lies the government and media tell are amplifications of the lies we tell ourselves. To stop being conned, stop conning yourself.” -James Wolcott, Vanity Fair March 2005
Barack Obama is not a peace president. Even those who don’t know he had come around to George Bush’s position on Iraq as early as 2004, should know by now that since 2008 the military has become as politicized as the police have become militarized, perfectly characteristic of any historical empire headed by a stalwart statist. More than a million Americans fought in Iraq, 4,484 of which are dead and unaccounted for and tens of thousands wounded. They are called heroes, criticism is marginalized as unpatriotic and Obama supporters applaud the whole thing- just as conservatives did under Bush.
The end to the Iraq War is not a triumph of diplomacy or strength in resolve of the Commander in Chief, but quite the opposite. Obama’s minions reiterated their desire to have thousands of soldiers remain deployed as trainers defying the legal calendar set to end the American occupation. Reaching even further, the State Department demanded immunity to Iraqi law and that’s when the US was effectively evicted from Iraq. By the way- we’re still not ‘gone’. Drones criss-cross Iraqi skies in the name of protection for an embassy the size of Vatican City.
Now, the same man who once said, “The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation” is threatening Iran while presenting a case as close to the facts as Bush’s for Iraq.
Freaky, isn’t it? Well, not if you’re polishing your ‘Hope & Change’ bumper sticker instead of reading. This president is perpetrating a storyline not unlike the one heard in the run up to the invasion of Iraq.
“Look at Iran. Through the power of our diplomacy, a world that was once divided about how to deal with Iran’s nuclear program, now stands as one. The regime is more isolated than ever before.” The Non-Aligned Movement, made up of 120 member countries and 17 observers has condemned the use of spy planes in Iran. Sounds like fixing the evidence all over again.
Approval from 47% of Americans on the job Barack Obama is doing is a product of mass cognitive dissonance. Afghanistan may have 23,000 less American troops by the end of the year but that will still be twice as many compared to the night of Obama’s innauguration. Then there’s Yemen, Somali and Pakistan. The CIA bombed these lands 239 times in the past 3 years. Drones surround Somalia, but local militants al-Shabab have felt limited wrath because of the administration’s concerns for motivating attacks on the continential United States. That’s right, the administration is more reasonable than Joint Special Operations Command – but that’s not why Obama lovers give him a pass. Barack Obama spent $768 billion on the Department of Defense in 2011 and in his State of the Union boasted that “our iron clad commitment [to Israel] has meant the closest military cooperation between our two countries in history.” Neither of those promises hope or change, unless you’re an Obama supporter. Oh yeah, and Libya…
President Barack Obama is not empathetic. Medical marijuana patients suffer because his DEA is shutting down dispensaries operating within state law in California. He ignores the 10th Amendment because it doesn’t matter either way to his fans who relish in the status quo.
Who doubts Obama would have signed the Stop Online Privacy Act? The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, which would force Internet Service Providers into becoming the long arm of Big Brother is just as dangerous and secretive, so nothing new for Obama here. The absense of due process for people subjected to the whims of giant trademark and copyright owners may not be worth the risk except to, of course, Obama zombies.
The National Defense Authorization Act, signed by Barack Obama “with reservations” legalizes indefinite military detainment without a lawyer afforded. What’s that supposed to mean? Torture cases are privileged under state secrets and Bradley Manning is a criminal. George Orwell would be impressed.
Honduras, a country under the rule of a coup government elected a new president- one of the same people who initiated the overthrow. Global observers boycotted, but the election carried on and President Lobo received the blessing of President Obama after large support from Republican and Democrat Institutes financed in America. The blowback from this is inevitable as all its neighboring countries rejected the coup and intervention. And then there is Bahrain, the highly desired customer for sale of arms from the State Department. After bad vibes from the House, Obama’s State Department briefed a few congressional offices. The sale will of course go through, but would not require more formal or public notifications.
In his State of the Union speech, the Commander in Chief proposed that a Veterans Jobs Corps direct returning war veterans to jobs as police officers and firefighters, “so America is as strong as those who defend her.” This is escalation of the police state plain and simple. Reaper Drones aren’t in your Sheriff’s Department yet? Good ol’ Barry Obama who expanded and passed the USA PATRIOT Act with an auto-pen for all that’s holy. Not even Bush x-rayed and molested air travelers incessantly and without mercy. Kidnapping is now law of the land but Obama voters don’t know or don’t care about the rise of the police state.
Obama’s fans must not know or care about the economy, inflation or state-sanctioned xenophobia. In the State of the Union, Obama pretended we are poorer because there are so many jobs in China! They took our jerbs! No need for xenophobia, Change gang. We are wealthier when others are working. If an i-Phone was built in America it would cost $1,200 to $1,500, so how does Barack Obama consider himself wise enough to help Americans keep more money in their pockets? He also claimed that the auto industry was back. The backroom deals that ended with tax payer money being loaned to a reckless, privileged corporation were all to maintain and grow a power structure. Barack Obama received a lot of money from AIG before chastising them for acting within the boundaries of his own bailout legislation. His top economic advisors say “We can’t rescue the economy without rescuing the banking system and we can’t rescue the banking system without rescuing the banks and people gotta get over that” while Barack gets to come up with you real juicy ones such as making sure “that people like me, and many members of congress pay our fair share.” They vote on their own pay increases every year! Usually sheep aren’t known to keep you awake at night, but the Obama-loving variety are just that bewildering. He said Wall Street “played by its own set of rules” without cracking a smile and “no bailouts, no handouts, no cop outs.” Central banking? What’s that?
“Women should earn equal pay for equal work” the President declared. Barack has a dream, you got to give it to him. If that dream is to capture the hearts and minds of America’s heartless and mindless then he’s been doing a bang-up job. On education Obama still only knows the nanny state, a passive version of the police state solution, and seeks to require that all children be made wards of the government school system until they graduate or turn 18. What a goal, what a vision for the Union.
This conversation needs to be happening now among young people more than ever about the future of the country. Debt and indentured servitude with war and zero privacy is obviously the track Obama has this generation on but the contrast must be made in order for the alternative choice to be understood. Whether they don’t know or don’t care is not important- now is the time to speak the truth…all of it.
