The Era of American Leadership Is Over
By Paul Craig Roberts
February 02, 2009 “Information Clearinghouse” — -Vast numbers of people in the United States and abroad are hoping that President Obama will end America’s illegal wars, halt America’s support for Israel’s massacre of Lebanese and Palestinians, and punish, instead of reward, the shyster banksters whose fraudulent financial instruments have destroyed economies and imposed massive sufferings on people all over the world. If Obama’s appointments are an indication, all of these hopeful people are going to be disappointed.
James Petras examines Obama’s foreign policy appointments and finds the largest collection of Zionist militarists outside of Avigdor Lieberman’s far right political party in Israel.
Petras concludes that Obama’s “diplomatic” team has Iran in its sights, an hostility that meshes with Israel’s own intent. Not realizing that a member of the press had been mistakenly invited to a selected audience, the Israeli ambassador to Australia said that Israel’s attack on Gaza was a dress rehearsal for a major attack on Iran. Netanyahu, the expected winner of Israel’s March elections, has again declared that Israel will not permit Iran to have a nuclear energy program as it would provide the basis for developing nuclear weapons.
It makes no sense for Israel to baldly state its intention to attack Iran if Israel does not mean it. What if the Iranians believe the Israelis and decide to strike first with their long-range missiles?
Obama’s economic appointments are just as discouraging. Obama chose as his Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, the man who helped Bush’s Treasury Secretary, Hank Paulson, engineer the $700 billion dollar rip off of the US taxpayer, money that was gifted to the crooked banksters who destroyed Americans’ pensions, jobs and health care coverage.
These banksters, and the negligent federal regulators that enabled them, should be put in prison, not handed hundreds of billions of dollars.

“Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say that there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe”.
~~Frank Zappa

I’m not a scientist — nor do I play one on TV, yet when I honestly look at the ability of “competent” Ohio weather-persons to accurately predict a decent 5-day forecast — using high-tech gadgetry to track many real-time global weather indicators and well-documented historical patterns, I definitely doubt the wisdom of Al Gore and his followers to use the measurements of one (harmless) trace element encased in ancient ice to predict with absolute certainty the coming catastrophic change in our climate. Even Einstein’s relativity is just a theory and subject to debate.
On the other hand, there are the laws of gravity — where objects are attracted to the earth; and of politics — where corruption is attracted to politicians. To be blunt, global warming is the kind of science you get when you introduce politics and the corresponding laws that govern politicians — virtually none. If you think any politician who advances such political “science” would be able to form a plan to counter its impact — be prepared for disappointment.

It’s par for the course for Obama and Biden, the men who promised “change” but in every step of their preparations for assuming office have pursued nothing but continuity, to acknowledge that they will protect criminals in the Bush administration from prosecution for authorizing torture, a complete violation of both the U.S. constitution and the Geneva Conventions.
When asked by ABC host George Stephanopoulos if top level Bush administration officials would be prosecuted for mandating prisoner abuse, Biden said that he and Obama would be “focusing on the future,” adding “I think we should be looking forward, not backwards.”

In the personal and private writings of Harry S. Truman, he says, “I don’t think there’s ever been a president who really did damage because he wanted damage to be done. I don’t think any of them willfully and maliciously tried to get the country in trouble…”
Looking back over the last eight years we can see what Harry could not have believed. Starting with Enron, the theft by manipulation of billions from California’s utility payers, this administration has willfully and maliciously done just that and more.
After the utter fiasco of 9/11, when the finest air defense system in the world stood down just long enough for the Vice-President to have to confirm the order to stand down in an emergency of unprecedented proportions, the “Patriot Act”, a one-foot thick stack of legal documents that abolished most of the Bill of Rights appeared overnight. No one assembles a foot-high stack of documents without preparation and, dare I say it, premeditation.
