The recent shooting of Congresswoman Giffords – Will the 1st Amendment and 2nd Amendment fall victim of the reactionary politics of the modern American establishment.
“Whether [political rhetoric] caused what happened in Tucson or not, it’ll cause the next tragedy,” Rep. Brad Sherman (D-CA) predicts on FOX News.
It was only a matter of time before the Gabrielle Giffords tragedy was turned into a rationale for the government to take more of our freedoms. This is how our government always responds to tragedy–it’s almost formulaic:
- Step 1 – wait for tragedy to occur, or actually create the tragedy.
- Step 2 – spread propaganda through the media, so everyone believes your story about the tragedy
- Step 3 – pass laws, or institute policies, that take away people’s freedoms.
- Step 4 – justify the increased Tyranny by citing the propaganda in step 2.
Rink’s opinion in the matter -
I am no fan of Sarah Palin. But Sarah Palin is not responsible for the massacre in Tucson. The infamous “crosshairs map” didn’t make Jared Loughner shoot Gabrielle Giffords. A poor choice of campaign imagery? Obviously, in hindsight. But as Howard Kurtz has already detailed, military metaphors in politics have a long history. Sarah Palin did not kill six people today. Jared Loughner did.
But some people don’t want a crisis to go to waste, even when it involves the death of a 9 year-old child. Seriously, Huffington Post, can’t you wait at least 24 hours before strategically aiming to end Palin’s political career? I don’t mind if you do it, but hold off until Representative Giffords is in stable condition. It’s classier.
The rhetoric of the Tea Party is not responsible for this tragedy, either. If unpopular ideas and speech are going to be on trial for this shooting, then we are in a lot of trouble. The freedom to speak our minds and hold anti-government opinions is foundational to a free society. This nation was established by people with anti-government ideas, and build upon anti-government documents like Thomas Paine’s Common Sense, and the Declaration of Independence. The First Amendment is not responsible for Loughner’s actions.
The Second Amendment is not responsible, either. It wasn’t well-armed government officials who tackled Loughner to the ground. It was a pair of brave, unarmed citizens. Their bravery surely saved lives. Imagine what would have happened had they been armed. Law-abiding citizens with guns make America safer.
Tougher gun laws would not have stopped him. How many people determined to commit murder would refrain because they have can’t legally own a gun? It’s likely Jared Loughner already planned to take someone’s life when the gun was purchased just over a month ago. If the consequences of murder aren’t enough to keep someone from killing, tougher gun laws certainly won’t do the job.
