"Indeed, Obama, whom Republicans love to hate, has gone out of his way to protect the Bush cohort from being held accountable."

They only pretend to hate each other. They only pretend to be enemies. At the end of the day, they all drink the same 20 year old single malt scotch (together) and all wear the same expensive suits. The only ones they really hate are the true outsiders, and they rarely let these people in to positions of power.
It's almost as if the 2 parties have conspired together to make sure power is traded only among them, but then again, that would be crazy, right?

The sense of foreboding I feel is difficult to control. I am struck dumb by the absolute passivity of the American people.
It seems that, in the words of William James, the U.S. population has become a bunch of "old fogeys". They cannot face the truth, and if "by sheer dint of arguement" they are force to see reality, within a day (or less), "all traces of the unassimilable truth have vanished from their heads".

I grew up listening to stories from my grandmother who was an adult during the Great Depression. I thus have never had the illusion of permance to anything. The rug can be pulled out from underneath at any time. Sixty odd years of post WWII society has lulled this country to sleep.
